With so many great photo editing software options out there, they have become a tremendous tool for today's artists. Adobe Photoshop, Photoscape, PicMonkey, Enlight, Procreate, the list goes on. This photo was altered through Enlight. The artist then has the option of leaving the altered image "as is" or using it as a guide for other mediums.
My own passion is in vintage photos, many from personal family albums. Vintage images are easy to obtain and reasonably priced. Be sure and check online and at local thrift shops and garage sales, they can be a treasure trove of willing future subjects.
What about copyrights?
In the U.S. virtually all photographs published before January 1923 are now in the public domain.
